Sunshine Math
Sunshine Math is a program designed to enhance a student's journey through mathematics by offering them the opportunity to think about math problems in a new way and recognize that math is part of each of our daily lives.Sunshine Math provides a challenge for students who are interested in learning new and exciting ways to approach mathematics. Each Monday and due the following Friday, students receive a math problems worksheet with each problem ranked according to its level of difficulty. The more stars beside a problem, the higher the level of difficulty -- and the more stars students can earn for solving it!
Students are encouraged to complete each worksheet to the best of their ability and return to their teachers so that they accumulate stars. Parents/guardians may need to read the problem aloud and explain any new words encountered or difficult concepts. Strategies may be suggested. Please do not solve a problem for a student -- answers given should represent the student's own effort. Worksheets are graded and awarded a star level by the PTA Sunshine Math representative in each class and then returned to students. Student star levels (50, 100, 150, 200, etc.) will be recognized in the Hendricks Herald. If you have not registered to receive the Hendricks Herald electronically, please GET HAEPTA NEWS here!
At the end of the school year, a competition will be held in first through fifth grade to determine which student will go on to represent Hendricks Avenue Elementary in the district-wide Sunshine Math Competition. The more problems your child solves during the year, the better equipped your child will be to solve these types of problems by the end of the school year. Every child that completes half of the worksheets given will be able to participate in the grade level competition at HAE.
Although all students are encouraged to participate in Sunshine Math to enrich their mathematical understanding, no student is required to complete the worksheets and failure to complete the worksheets will not affect mathematics grades.
